Spock is the heart and soul of the film. He represents the ideals of logic, duty, and selflessness that define Star Trek’s philosophy. He is loyal to Kirk and the Enterprise, even when he disagrees with their actions or emotions. He is also willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good, as he demonstrates in the film’s climax, when he enters a radiation-filled chamber to restore the warp drive of the Enterprise. He and the Ilia probe enter the Voyager 6 probe, and a bright explosion occurs. V’Ger disappears, leaving behind a new star. Kirk and the crew celebrate their victory and resume their exploration of the galaxy.

Analysis

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a film that tries to balance the spirit of the original TV series with the demands of a big-budget blockbuster. It succeeds in some aspects, but fails in others. On the positive side, the film features a compelling premise, a loyal cast, and impressive visual effects. It also pays homage to the TV series, with references to the characters’ histories, personalities, and catchphrases.

However, the film also suffers from a slow pace, a thin plot, and a lack of action and humor. The film is mostly a series of long and dialogue-heavy scenes, with the characters staring at the screen or the viewscreen, or wandering around the ship or V’Ger. The film lacks the excitement, adventure, and fun that made the TV series so popular. The film also fails to develop the characters beyond their familiar roles, and does not give them much to do or say. The film focuses more on the spectacle than the story, and as a result, it feels cold and distant.

Conclusion

Many people, including some fans, are surprised to know that there are 13 total Star Trek Movies. these movies span an amazing 37 years (1979-2016). Other than the Bond series and the Star War Series, I’m hard pressed to come up with another series of movies that has been successful over the same period of time.

I think it’s easiest to break down the Star Trek Movies into 3 parts; The original Series, The next generation Series, and The Reboot Series (also called Altered Timeline Series or kelvin timeline).

Here we’ll list the Star Trek Movies in order. I’ll talk about the movies and tell you my favorite. Hint the featured picture should tell you my favorite movie and favorite Science Fiction villain.

Original Series – Star Trek Movies

1. Star Trek – The Motion Picture (1979)

   This was a highly anticipate first full length movie of Star Trek. Introduced on the big screen 10 years after the end of the Star Trek TV series, it was quickly obvious that the Trekkies still loved Star Trek. While the critics gave the film mixed reviews, the fans loved it. For me, it was great to see the upgraded graphics. The Enterprise was a sight to see! Star Trek  – The Motion Picture.

2. Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan (1982)

   The “Wrath of Khan” was able to build on the success of the first full length film. Ricardo Montalban played the villain – Khan. The storyline picks up from an episode in the Star Trek series. This movie is wonderfully done, but honestly Khan steals the show. Who can forget this Khan quote “To the last, I grapple with thee. From hell’s heart, I stab at thee. For hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee.” It’s almost Shakespearean in it’s grandeur.  This is not only my favorite Star Trek Movie but Khan is my favorite Science fiction Villain.

3. Star Trek III – The Search for Spock

The Search for Spock is the third full length motion picture in the Star Trek series. Spock has been killed (wait what!!) and his casket has been launched into space. I don’t want to give away the entire plot. So make sure and watch this one. There’s a guest appearance by Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon commander.
